Fresh Take: Broncos, Eagles, Titans and Bears, oh my

tom-brady_NFL_New England Patriots_QB

Welcome back Sports Fans, it’s another addition of the SCL Fresh Take!  Has the NFL season been a surprise, or what?!?  Jockeying back and forth for biggest surprise of the year are the Denver Broncos on the good side and the Tennessee Titans on the bad!  The Broncos are 6 and oh and running away with the AFC West after pasting San Diego on Monday.  The Chargers are off to their normal weak start and look to be looking up at Bronco butt in the standings for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile the Titans got lathered by Golden Boy Tom Brady and the Patriots who watched Brady throw five TD passes in one quarter on route to a 59-0 laugher!  The Titans never showed up for the game and did not want to be playing in the ice and snow in New England.  I love Jeff Fisher and will love him even more when he’s coaching Dallas next year…  A Fisher firing is on the horizon especially after watching the Titans mail it in game after game this year.   On the flip side, Brady continues his reign as the NFL’s favorite and most protected QB.  Did you catch the “Roughing” the Passer penalty called when one of the Titans waved his hand in front of Brady’s face?  I’m stunned Tom didn’t take a dive to get away…

Two other disappointments showed up on Sunday as the Eagles threw the ball 46 times (88% of their plays) against the Raiders and their 31st ranked run defense.  The iggies went down 13 to 9 which led Head Coach Andy Reid to ponder if they should have ran the ball a few more times.  The San Diego slow start makes one forget about Philly, but the Eagles always seem to flush home field advantage in the playoffs by blowing games like this and at Cincinnati last year!  Meanwhile Matt Forte of the Chicago Bears matched his season total of two fumbles in two successive plays at the goal line Sunday night in Atlanta.  The Bears went down 21 to 14 and it looks like Forte will get to go the the Tom Coughlin school of frequent fumblers ; wrap it up Matt!

And that wraps it up for us, stay Fresh!

Fresh Take – Olympics, Gisele, Jerry Jones & Seminoles

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Olympics_Obama_Oakland_Raiders_Tom Brady_Dallas_Cowboys_Bobby BowdenHey, is that Rocky Balboa I see running through the market of south Philly on his way to the steps of the Philadelphia art museum?  No, its Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable honing the street fighting skills he’ll need when he goes to the slammer for assaulting one of his own coaches.  I thought this was the NFL, not MMA.  This cat may really be going to jail for breaking someone’s jaw.  Can you say DYSFUNCTIONAL?  Captain Hook, I mean Al Davis, is captaining a pirate ship lost at sea.  My oh my!

Okay, let’s get started with some real sports and today’s Fresh Take.

Congratulation to the city of Rio de Janeiro and the country of Brazil for landing the 2016 Summer Olympics games.  This will be the first time the summer games have ever been held on the continent of South America.  Good for them.  Thank God Chicago didn’t get the games as the city would have had to rack up a ton of debt in order to pull these games off.  Now I know why President Obama, the First Lady Michelle and the “first lady backup” Oprah Winfrey (aka Okra Winfrey) were on hand for the bid process.  Someone said budget overruns and they bolted into action.  I know the Obamas were not the first to do so, but when did heads of state anoint themselves as Olympiad apostles and interject themselves into the bid process?  Don’t these clowns have bigger fish to fry?  Send a Chicago sports legend like Michael Jordan, not “Ms. Dysfunctional daytime T.V.”  At least they didn’t send Ellen.  Can a brother get an AMEN?

Next!  Was that Gisele Bundchen yesterday wearing number twelve for the Patriots?  I guess ‘ole Tommy boy needed a day off so he sent his girl to face the Ravens instead.  If I’m not mistaken, Tom/Gisele was wearing a chinstrap just like all the other boys were, but complained to the refs about a would-be tackler glancing off his leg.  Come on Tom, this is football, not a fashion runway where you only have to worry about getting the heel of your stiletto caught in your dress.  Your boy Rodney Harrison even called you down on this one.  Okay, the owners are the ones who really created these girly football players, not the other way around.  Change the rules and make the quarterbacks play 11 on 11 football and not 7 on 7.

When things aren’t going well, you have to look at the very top and when I look at the very top of the Dallas Cowboys, I only see one person…..Mr. Facelift himself, Jerry Jones.  We can all sit back and blame Tony Romo and company (Coaches Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett) but I think Jerry has spent way too much time focusing on the new stadium and not on the boys who score touchdowns.  Big mistake J.J.  The Cowboys bogged down at Denver’s 8 yard line yesterday as time expired at Mile High Stadium after facing a first and goal from the same position with half a minute left.  Four shots at the end zone and you don’t throw one pass toward your best target, Jason Witten?  Instead, you throw twice at one of the league’s best cover corners in Champ Bailey.  His name is “Champ” for a reason big dog.  Stay away from him if you please.  Poor play, poor coaching and an overall lack of fire means only one thing in my book……poor leadership.

What has happened to the Houston Oilers, I mean the Tennessee Titans?  I said a few weeks ago that this team reminded me more of a Phillip Fulmer coached team from Knoxville and not last year’s 13-3 team from Nashville.  Two weeks later, it has gotten even worse.  The 0-4 Titans have vowed to stick with quarterback Kerry Collins despite Collins throwing his fifth and sixth INTs of the season.  This team has way bigger issues than just the QB position but Collins is not helping his own cause.  Is it time to go to Vince Young yet?  According to Jeff Fisher, the answer is NO!  Good luck with that one coach but at 0-4, you’d better start turning over the right rocks before the season gets away from you.

Hey Ho, Bobby’s gotta go!  Hey Ho, Bobby’s gotta go!  I can hear the chants in Tallahassee now.  The Seminole faithful are getting restless after Bowden’s grid iron squad posted another lackluster performance in their 28-21 loss to Boston College over the weekend. After an impressive three game start, the ‘Noles have hit the skids the last two weeks and have stunk up the joint doing so.  Florida State is just another ACC team that has failed miserably to live up to the preseason hype, joining Clemson and North Carolina.  Can someone say Mountain West conference as a BCS conference?  ACC ain’t getting it done this year.

And that, my friends is what is HOT in sports.  Join us again for the next Fresh Take.

SCL’s Fresh Take

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Tom_Brady_New_England_Patriots_NFLHey sports fans, welcome back to the all new SCL’s Fresh Take, a whole new twist on sports for you, the fan.  Did you happen to catch the end of the US Open match last night?  I bet you’re telling yourself ole Roger is over the hill now that he has 15 Grand Slam titles?  Right?  Don’t worry about ole Roger just because he got beat last night.  R-Fed played in the finals of all four Grand Slams this year and outside of a few lapses in concentration, would have had a clean sweep of all the hardware for his trophy case.  He’ll be fine as wine for a few more years.

What about that comeback by Tom Brady and the Patriots last night?  After a rough first half, Brady and company got things going late and scored two touchdowns with only 2:03 left in the game.  Can you say “Game On” for the Pats?  Not so fast Sporty!  While Tommy and the “O” were cranked up in high gear, the “D” looked like they were out for drinks.  Gone are the days of winning Super Bowls with their stifling defense.  This ain’t the same unit without Seymour, Bruschi, Harrison, Law and on and on and on of Pro Bowlers.  Brady to Moss better stay healthy for this team to return to glory in Miami this year.

Next…..T.O.’s debut in a Bills uniform was over hyped and never quite lived up to the drama we are all hoping for but the boys from the shores of Lake Erie LOOKED GOOD.  Trent Edwards was orchestrating the Bills “O” up and down the field (although against the aforementioned Pats D) with their last TD drive being a “Championship Drive.”  Just when you thought things may be getting better in western New York, the real Bills showed up and delivered ANOTHER heartbreaking loss for their faithful.  Game, Set and Match.  Will they ever get over the hump?

Let’s move on to something less depressing.  Did you see Tim Lincecum dominate the red hot Rockies last night?  Timmy Boy overcame a bulky back to hurl 7 complete, fan 11 and scatter 6 base knocks while only yielding 1 run.  Not a bad night at the office considering he was scratched from his previous outing with a doctor’s excuse.  Lincecum should haul in his share of post season awards this year including the National League Cy Young.  The Mullet Boy from the Frisco Bay is the REAL DEAL.

And finally, what about MJ’s Hall of Fame acceptance speech from Saturday night?  Yahoo Sports and many others are slamming the former Bull for his petty rants and score settling after being praised as the greatest basketball player of all time.  Mike? Mike? Mike?  What were you thinking?  Are you not above all the senseless jabs at your mere mortals in the “Association?”  Just hang your hat on those 6 pretty rings and knowing your mug hangs on those Springfield, MA walls.  Using some basketball vernacular, MJ threw up an air ball on this one.  I don’t think I want to “Be like Mike” anymore.

And that, my friends is what is HOT in sports.  Join us again tomorrow for SCL’s Fresh Take.

Tony, do your talking on the field…

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

tonyromo_dallascowboys_nfl1The Dallas Cowboys are now Tony Romo’s team.  Yes, they have been his team since he signed up as an undrafted free agent years ago, but now the crosshairs are squarely on Number 9.  The report on the Terrell Owens Twitter over the weekend has made the City of Dallas atwitter over the “revelation” that it was ”the OC and Romo” that ran him out of town.  This is the first season that Romo will not have Owens to throw to, and for Dallas to succeed, he and Garrett better be correct that they are better off without TO.

Last season, ten of Romo’s 26 TD passes were to Owens and over the last three years, there has not been a more prolific QB-WR touchdown tandem.  Wide receiver Roy Williams only caught 16 passes from Romo last year, none for touchdowns, so he has some big shoes to fill in Big D.   The offense is going to be under critical review this year with TO gone, three losses in the last four games last season and a serious drop in statistical rankings.  Add to that, a growing sense of dissatisfaction among the fan base that Romo has the focus and maturity to lead the Cowboys and 2009 becomes a reality check year for Tony Romo.

When one speaks of the quarterback with the boyish charm, rocket arm and diva girlfriend, are they speaking about Tony Romo or Tom Brady?  Add the “and three Superbowl Rings” and the difference is very distinctive.  Sure Brady does many of the same things that Romo does, the difference is, it’s not during the football season and it’s built on a platform of being arguably the best quarterback of all time.

Tony, you don’t have the stats or pedigree that Brady has; until you do leave Jessica Simpson at home and do your talking on the field.  2009 is your year to show everyone what Tony Romo is made of…

Watch Out Romo: There’s A New Cowboy In Town

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Stephen McGee, QB, DallasStephen McGee, QB, Texas A&M–4th Round, Dallas Cowboys.  McGee comes to Dallas as a raw talent but will develop quickly under Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett and with the guidance of Tony Romo and Jon Kitna.  He graduated before his junior season and will earn his MBA in May.  The prediction here is that McGee will make his presence known well in advance of expectations.    McGee will turn out to be the best pick the Cowboys made and could be the consummate leader this team sorely needs.  While Romo is jet-setting with Jessica Simpson, McGee will be in the film room.

Despite playing in an option-based offense in college, McGee tested as well or out-performed almost every quarterback at the NFL combine.  He possesses similar tools, intelligence and leadership qualities that a former late round pick, Tom Brady possesses.  The Pats struck gold with Brady, and the Cowboys have done the same in this year’s draft.

McGee suffered a shoulder injury his senior year at Texas A&M, pressing a young Jerrod Johnson into immediate duty.  He calmly accepted the situation and was never near 100% the final year, so his role again shifted to coach and mentor, primarily coaching Johnson while nursing the shoulder, only playing when absolutely necessary.

McGee came to A&M as a nationally-ranked passer but with a lack of talent at receiver, former coach Dennis Franchione turned him into a pinball as an option quarterback, once rushing over 36 times for over 200 yards against Nebraska.  With his high school credentials and early success as a freshman, McGee could have transferred to almost any D-1 school with a pro-style offense, but he stayed at A&M.   He excelled in the offense even without a great deal of talent surrounding him.

Current A&M and former Green Bay head coach/GM Mike Sherman stated many times that McGee would be drafted; this in spite of the option offense and the pounding he took under Franchione.  Certainly Sherman’s high praise amongst his former NFL colleagues had the attention of scouts.  Finally healthy, McGee shined at the East/West Shrine game this year.  As the draft approached, McGee’s name kept being mentioned by draftniks Mel Kiper and Todd McShay as a raw talent with tremendous upside.

For a Cowboys team sorely lacking in the areas of leadership and character, it’s coming.  In spite of Wade Phillips ineptitude as head coach and Jerry Jones’ metamorphosis into an Al Davis clone, Cowboys fans will look back at Day 2 of the 2009 NFL Draft as a franchise-rescuing pick.

Quarterbacks Do Not Win Super Bowls

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

dan-marino11joe-montanaI am sick and tired of all the pundits giving the quarterback credit for Super Bowl wins.  Yes, the quarterback is the field general for the team and, in a lot of cases, winning a Super Bowl has a lot to do with whether the quarterback plays well or does not. But, there are twenty-one other starters that take the field that have a lot to do with the outcome.  Football is the ultimate TEAM sport.  It is the only sport where players are not asked to play both offense and defense.  Baseball, basketball and hockey all require players to stay on the field, court or rink when either team has the ball or puck.  Also, we still have not mentioned the coaches, especially the head coach, who is usually the straw that stirs the drink.  I know John Wooden always said you can not win championships without great players, but I say more often than not, great players can not win championships without a great head coach.

This phenomenon is predicated on the media’s wish to idolize certain players because most of the media are non-athlete types who only dreamed of playing on the big stage but were never able to.  The media really has a biased agenda and is often not equitable in its adjudication of who is great and who is not.  I can cite the inequities of Hall of Fame voting, Heisman Trophy voting, college football polls, etc.  Why did it take Jim Rice 15 years to get elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame when his numbers were comparable to other Hall of Fame players?  Media bias!

Media Bias leads me back to my argument on quarterbacks who play in the Super Bowl.  I cite Joe Montana, Troy Aikman, Terry Bradshaw and Tom Brady who all won at least 3 Super Bowls.  Don’t get me wrong – each of these guys are great quarterbacks and should be given a lot of credit for their accomplishments on the grandest stage of them all, but they only reached their idol status because the media built them up bigger than they really are.  While  Montana, Aikman, Bradshaw and Brady are all great, their career numbers are dwarfed by the likes of Dan Marino, Warren Moon and Fran Tarkington, all of whom never won a Super Bowl.  Yes, they are all in the Hall of Fame, but why are they not considered as great as the others?  Do we only look at how one performs on the big stage?  Why is one’s whole body of work not given equal consideration by the media?  These SB quarterbacks were surrounded by Hall of Fame players and most notable, incredible head coaches who made it all possible.  I say it was more the head coach and a function of the head coach’s philosophy of running the football and playing defense than it was the quarterback himself.

John Elway is now revered as a top five all time quarterback.  Do we remember that Elway lost the Super Bowl three times before Mike Shanahan and Terrell Davis came to town?  Peyton Manning did win a Super Bowl but he never even made it there until the Colts decided to bring their defense and hand the ball off to their two headed rushing monster of Addai and Rhodes who rushed for a combined 190 yards.  Tom Brady never won a Super Bowl when he was the focal point of the offense.  After being named league MVP and orchestrating the most prolific offensive season ever seen in the NFL, the Patriots were dumped by the Giants in the Super Bowl.  By the way, The Giants played great defense and ran the football.

Just think about what you are saying the next time you anoint Joe Montana the greatest quarterback of all time.  Give the whole body of work just as much consideration as you do the performance on the big stage.
