Tony Romo_Dallas Cowboys_NFL

Okay, we’re five weeks into the season!  Hopefully you are sitting at 5 and oh or 4 and 1 but if not don’t despair, there’s still time to make up ground!  Some moves to make…

1) The 3 for 1 Trade: If you feel like you are one player away from really taking off (meaning you are in the upper half of your league standings) and want to make that push towards a Championship, don’t be afraid to over pay and grab the player you covet.  Go to one of the also ran teams with a bonafide star (like Roddy White or Willis McGahee) and offer three of your middle of the road guys for their superstar and two of their worst players (Kicker, 5th receiver etc.).  This way you fill up your starting lineup with studs and only give up depth in return…  One caution, be sure to factor in bye weeks and/or injuries before depleting depth!

2)  Don’t give up on players too early!  Going crazy over the way Tony Romo or Michael Turner are playing up one week and then down the next?!?  Don’t give up yet as the studs always show up sooner or later.  Be sure to take advantage of matchups that are favorable but don’t over think it.  You picked guys in the first round for a reason, don’t sit them when they can blow up at any time!

3) If you are at the bottom of the pack, don’t be afraid to change it up with trades and pickups.  Guys like Jeremy Maclin and Donny Avery are coming out of the woodwork and are outscoring TO and Wes Welker.  It doesn’t matter if their NFL teams stink, garbage time touchdowns still count for 6 points!  Also if you have one blue chip player, offer him up to the league big boys and let them fight it out for him.  Dangle the player and wait for the best offer just like at the baseball trade deadline.  Someone will give you a few good guys back, you’ll be on your way towards winning and that’s the name of the game!

SCL’s Fresh Take

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Tom_Brady_New_England_Patriots_NFLHey sports fans, welcome back to the all new SCL’s Fresh Take, a whole new twist on sports for you, the fan.  Did you happen to catch the end of the US Open match last night?  I bet you’re telling yourself ole Roger is over the hill now that he has 15 Grand Slam titles?  Right?  Don’t worry about ole Roger just because he got beat last night.  R-Fed played in the finals of all four Grand Slams this year and outside of a few lapses in concentration, would have had a clean sweep of all the hardware for his trophy case.  He’ll be fine as wine for a few more years.

What about that comeback by Tom Brady and the Patriots last night?  After a rough first half, Brady and company got things going late and scored two touchdowns with only 2:03 left in the game.  Can you say “Game On” for the Pats?  Not so fast Sporty!  While Tommy and the “O” were cranked up in high gear, the “D” looked like they were out for drinks.  Gone are the days of winning Super Bowls with their stifling defense.  This ain’t the same unit without Seymour, Bruschi, Harrison, Law and on and on and on of Pro Bowlers.  Brady to Moss better stay healthy for this team to return to glory in Miami this year.

Next…..T.O.’s debut in a Bills uniform was over hyped and never quite lived up to the drama we are all hoping for but the boys from the shores of Lake Erie LOOKED GOOD.  Trent Edwards was orchestrating the Bills “O” up and down the field (although against the aforementioned Pats D) with their last TD drive being a “Championship Drive.”  Just when you thought things may be getting better in western New York, the real Bills showed up and delivered ANOTHER heartbreaking loss for their faithful.  Game, Set and Match.  Will they ever get over the hump?

Let’s move on to something less depressing.  Did you see Tim Lincecum dominate the red hot Rockies last night?  Timmy Boy overcame a bulky back to hurl 7 complete, fan 11 and scatter 6 base knocks while only yielding 1 run.  Not a bad night at the office considering he was scratched from his previous outing with a doctor’s excuse.  Lincecum should haul in his share of post season awards this year including the National League Cy Young.  The Mullet Boy from the Frisco Bay is the REAL DEAL.

And finally, what about MJ’s Hall of Fame acceptance speech from Saturday night?  Yahoo Sports and many others are slamming the former Bull for his petty rants and score settling after being praised as the greatest basketball player of all time.  Mike? Mike? Mike?  What were you thinking?  Are you not above all the senseless jabs at your mere mortals in the “Association?”  Just hang your hat on those 6 pretty rings and knowing your mug hangs on those Springfield, MA walls.  Using some basketball vernacular, MJ threw up an air ball on this one.  I don’t think I want to “Be like Mike” anymore.

And that, my friends is what is HOT in sports.  Join us again tomorrow for SCL’s Fresh Take.

Tony, do your talking on the field…

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

tonyromo_dallascowboys_nfl1The Dallas Cowboys are now Tony Romo’s team.  Yes, they have been his team since he signed up as an undrafted free agent years ago, but now the crosshairs are squarely on Number 9.  The report on the Terrell Owens Twitter over the weekend has made the City of Dallas atwitter over the “revelation” that it was ”the OC and Romo” that ran him out of town.  This is the first season that Romo will not have Owens to throw to, and for Dallas to succeed, he and Garrett better be correct that they are better off without TO.

Last season, ten of Romo’s 26 TD passes were to Owens and over the last three years, there has not been a more prolific QB-WR touchdown tandem.  Wide receiver Roy Williams only caught 16 passes from Romo last year, none for touchdowns, so he has some big shoes to fill in Big D.   The offense is going to be under critical review this year with TO gone, three losses in the last four games last season and a serious drop in statistical rankings.  Add to that, a growing sense of dissatisfaction among the fan base that Romo has the focus and maturity to lead the Cowboys and 2009 becomes a reality check year for Tony Romo.

When one speaks of the quarterback with the boyish charm, rocket arm and diva girlfriend, are they speaking about Tony Romo or Tom Brady?  Add the “and three Superbowl Rings” and the difference is very distinctive.  Sure Brady does many of the same things that Romo does, the difference is, it’s not during the football season and it’s built on a platform of being arguably the best quarterback of all time.

Tony, you don’t have the stats or pedigree that Brady has; until you do leave Jessica Simpson at home and do your talking on the field.  2009 is your year to show everyone what Tony Romo is made of…

Jay Cutler Needs to go to Timeout

Petulant: Showing sudden irritation, especially over some trifling annoyance.Denver Broncos - NFL Player

Petulant children just need to be waited out.  The waiting out approach often will lead to temporary discourse but usually ends up benefiting both parties involved.  Sometimes this approach does not work as the parent gives in and the child slips into the dark, destructive world of an enabling society.

Jay Culter is acting like a petulant child.  He did not like it when the Broncos fired Mike Shanahan.  He did not like it when the Broncos also replaced their offensive coordinator.  He did not like it when the new regime listened to trade offers as the free agency period began.  Now, for the second time in three months, Jay is asking for a trade.

Jay, this is a business, not a playground.  You have a contract, you are represented by a union and it is time to be a professional.  No one owes you anything.  You are an unproven commodity with a sub .500 winning percentage and no playoff appearances.  The only reason you were selected to the pro bowl is due to a flawed selection process where the selections are done after only twelve games.  If the selections were done after sixteen games, you would have been replaced by your arch rival and out performing nemesis, Phillip Rivers.

I hope the Broncos stand their ground like the Eagles did with T.O. and the Bucs did with Keyshawn Johnson and not capitulate like many in our enabling society have a tendency to do.  The two most egregious examples of this type of enabling were the John Elway and Eli Manning draft scenarios when both players refused to sign with the teams that drafted them.  Caving in to petulant behavior sends the wrong message.  For every John Elway and Eli Manning there are 100 more who wind up in that destructive world and become burdens on society.

Fire Jerry Jones

Monday, March 9th, 2009

jj3Today, the saga of TO relocated to another NFL city as the outspoken wide receiver will now be catching passes on the shores of Lake Erie.  Good for TO and for the Bills.  I think both ended up winners in this case with TO getting paid $6.5MM for one year and the Bills getting a viable offensive threat as they try to get over the ever elusive playoff hump.

As for the Dallas Cowboys, while they are surely winners in the short run for dumping TO, their egotistical and outspoken owner remains their biggest liability.  As a business man, Jerry Jones has parlayed $140 million into the $1.1 billion mega bonanza currently known as the Dallas Cowboys.  As an NFL owner, Jerry Jones has destroyed the foundation Jimmy Johnson built in the early 1990’s and continues to try bizarre experiments which are reminiscent of a younger Al Davis.

Let’s review some of Jerry’s infamous history.  After back to back Super Bowl wins following 1992 and 1993 seasons, Jerry Jones had too much to drink one night and started bragging about how the successes the Cowboys had enjoyed were due mainly to himself and that he would fire head coach Jimmy Johnson if he wanted.  A few days later, Jimmy and Jerry parted ways and the Dallas soap opera shifted from Southfork Ranch to Valley Ranch with the role of hated villain shifting from JR to JJ (Jerry Jones).

JJ went out and hired his old college buddy Barry Switzer to replace Johnson and to lead this team laden with future hall of famers to another Super Bowl victory.  The Cowboys first attempt flamed out after three first quarter turnovers against 49ers in the NFC championship game.  Their second attempt was successful as the Boys luckily won Super Bowl XXX over the Steelers in what is simply known as the Neil O’Donnell game.  This brief taste of success was more a reflection of what others didn’t do than what JJ and team did do.  Two seasons later, the Switzer experiment ended after a 6-10 campaign amid discipline and off the field problems giving way to the hiring of Chan Gailey.  The Gailey experiment lasted only two seasons eventually yielding to the Dave Camp experiment which lasted one more year than the Gailey experiment.

Finally in 2003, JJ seemed to have reversed all the nonsense with the hiring hall of fame coach Bill Parcells.  Parcells immediately placed his stamp on the team leading the Cowboys to the playoffs with the league’s best defense.  The next two seasons yielded no playoff appearances so JJ tried another experiment.  This experiment was TO and was against the better judgment of his current hall of fame coach.  Parcells and TO co-existed for one season, yielding a 9-7 record and a first round playoff loss.  After four seasons, Parcells quietly slipped back into retirement, leaving JJ with a very talented army and no general.  Along came nice guy Wade Phillips who led the ‘Boys to a 13-3 record before losing to the Giants in the first round of the playoffs.

After going 1-3 in December and missing the playoffs in 2008, JJ was torn between his coach and his star receiver as one or both probably needed to go.  TO was the first to be shown the door thus ending the three year experiment.  The Wade Phillips experiment will last at least one more year in Big D but how long will the JJ experiment last?

Hey JJ, take a chapter out of the Dan Rooney, Jeffrey Lurie and Bob Kraft NFL ownership book.  Quit talking to the media, quit joining the team on the sidelines during the game and turnover the football part of the business to someone who knows football.
