Random Thoughts on Sports These Days

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

So as I look over the Sports landscape these days, we are basically in a lull as we are not fully into Baseball yet, Hockey and Basketball are not yet to their playoffs which let in too many teams and March Madness is yet on the horizon.  However I was looking at a few of the Sports stories these days full of either innuendo or bravado, posturing or pleading and just shake my head.

So Steve Williams, caddy for the great Tiger Woods has a little time on his hands.  And as a folk hero in his native New Zealand, he has taken his show back home and proceeded to claim his ignorance of any of Wood’s hijinks, that he is mad at Tiger for what he’s done, sorry for Elin and “will tell Woods off” when the time is right.  Really?  So golfers on the tour knew what Woods was up to, nudge, nudge, wink, wink but Williams did not???  C’mon Steve, cut us a break.  And save the speeches unless you really expect us to believe you are going to tell off the man whose made you over a milli0n dollars (Williams gets at least 10% of Tiger’s winnings if not up to 20%) for carrying a golf bag for him.  Nice work if you can get it.

And good ole Pete Carroll has moved back into the NFL, this time as head coach for the Seattle Seahawks.  Interesting timing if you consider he had one of the best QBs in college in Matt Barkley with three years of eligibility left.  Of course, the investigation into USC and Reggie Bush has heated up and one can anticipate that head hunting for those who knew something is coming up fast.  Guess it was time for Mr Carroll to get out of Dodge.

Our final and biggest bonehead award goes to he of the questionable character, Ben Roethlisberger, two time Superbowl winning Quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Roethlisberger started everyone questioning his judgement years ago when he took a header off his motorcycle while not wearing a helmet.  Now the QB, hot on the singles scene, has been rung up not once, but TWICE for potential sexual misconduct.  Maybe Big Ben needs to stay out of the bars and hope to meet Ms. Right at the library.  At least that’s what the Steelers are hoping, now that their long term investment in Mr. Roethlisberger is looking sketchy at best.

Please someone get me into a real set of Sports (the Olympics weren’t bad, but too much jumping around by NBC) stories versus all these shady dealings!

A Tiger or a Cheetah, Who Cares

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Did you hear the latest?!?  Tiger Woods cheated on his wife!  No seriously, I heard him admit it last Friday…  Okay sports and golf fans, yes, Tiger admitted to making a mistake, that he cheated and that he is sorry.  All better now???

I am shocked and apalled at how many people thought Tiger Woods owed them an apology.  What a waste of time the press has spent since Thanksgiving trying to get a scoop.  Did Tiger give any juicy details or innuendo that the tabloid hawks wanted?  No, of course not.  He apologized (hopefully sincerely, it seemed to be so, but we’ll see…) to his wife and his sponsors for letting her down and losing them sales.  That’s it; it’s over, it’s done.  Finally, I hope.

How many times was the thirteen minute apology played and replayed this weekend? And all the talking heads analyzing whether he was robotic, or sincere or complaining a camera malfunctioned.  Man, cut the guy a break!  His marriage is on the rocks, he is separated from his kids and people want to nitpick his presentation skills.  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t condone what he did.  He’s paying a steep price and deserves it, but that’s between him and his family.

The only person Tiger has to answer to is Elin and unfortunately for him, she wasn’t there.  A telling point, don’t you think?  Did you really expect her to be?  You’ll have a hard time convincing me (and definitely her) that Tiger actually loves and respects his wife after having over a dozen flings some lasting over three years.  So Tiger, you blew it!  You got caught and now pay the price like every other human being.  So man up, move on and forget about her.  Time to pick up the sticks and get ready for the Masters.  As you, of course, found out on your yacht, there are other fish in the sea…  Hope you do better the next round…

Don’t Blame December, Dallas

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Wade Phillips_Dallas Cowboys_NFLIn between taking swipes at Tiger Woods and his nine, I mean eleven, man is it up to an even dozen women?!?, pundits are expounding on the annual December swoon that descends upon the Dallas Cowboys.  Swoon, shwoon; I’m not buying it at all!  Last season the Cowboys went 1-3 in December, horrible right?  Of course all four of the teams they played were playoff teams and three made their respective Conference Championships.  This year the Boys are oh and 2 losing to the New York Giants in the Meadowlands and the San Diego Chargers yesterday.  Both teams were expected to contend this year and the Chargers are riding an eight game winning streak.  On the horizon for the Cowboys are the 13 and oh New Orleans Saints in the Superdome which doesn’t look real good for the Cowboys either.  Long story short, I look at the schedule the Cowboys are playing and don’t buy into the swoon theory.

Where I place the blame is on the coaching staff and Head Coach Wade Phillips.  In four of the five Cowboy losses, the team lost by seven points or less; true that is indicative of most NFL games but what is says to me is that the Cowboys can not  close out quality opponents in close games.  The field goal kicker is four of ten from over 40 yards which is pathetic.  Why does Wade put up with that???  Bill Parcells canned Mike Vanderjagt when he missed a few kicks and he was the most accurate kicker of all time!  Wade Phillips can’t pull the trigger on the hard decisions and it is time to cut him loose.  With coaching candidates like Mike Holmgren, Mike Shanahan and Bill Cowher on the radar screen, Wade Phillips is a liability to say the least!  And oh by the way, send Jason Garrett packing with him…

Fresh Take – Tiger and Phil, Romo, Lions & Twitter

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Tiger_Woods_Phil_Mickelson_Dallas-Cowboys_Cowboy-Stadium1Are you ready for some football?  Hey, Monday Night Football?  Okay, add in a little golf and we’ll have you covered so let’s jump right into today’s SCL’s Fresh Take.

The Detroit Lions got off the schnide yesterday ending an ugly 0 and 19 run through the NFL by beating the hapless Redskins 19-14.  Streak over!  Nightmare over!  Can someone give me an AMEN?  Could this win not have come at a better time for the Lions and their beleaguered fan base who have suffered through bad football, an economy that has gone belly-up and an unemployment rate close to 30%? The answer is a resounding NO!  Lion Fan has had a tough go at it over the past few years and is the poster child for hard times in America.    Too bad President Obama could not figure out a way to steal Detroit Lions stock from the Ford family and give it to the players union like he did with the Big 3 automakers.  If any team ever needed a bailout, the Detroit Lions were it.

Tiger and Phil both won on Sunday and took home huge sums of cash for their play at the PGA Tour finale at Eastlake in Atlanta with Woods raking in a cool $10.8MM and Mick a cool $4.2MM.  Woods’ payday came from winning the season long Fed Ex Cup point’s race and Lefty’s came from outdistancing Woods and the field by three strokes to win the Tour Championship.  The media has built up this Fed Ex Cup race because that it’s job and that is what creates revenue but I’m not sure the Fed Ex Cup is good for the PGA Tour.  Lost in all the hoop-la of are the local sponsors who have been the backbone of the tour and supported its golfers for years and years.  In the old days, the community hosting that week’s event took the players in and treated them as one of their own.  Those days seem to be long gone but should not be forgotten just because our friends in the media have teamed up with Finchy, Tiger and the boys to chase the all mighty dollar.

Finally, an adult has taken charge of a senseless and uncontrolled problem in sports.  Texas Tech’s head coach and self proclaimed pirate, Mike Leach laid down the law today concerning his payer’s use of Twitter.  No more!  Adios Tweetmeisters.  Like I said last week, this is just like pulling a drivers license from a teenager who can not make good decisions.  One of Leach’s players Tweeted about the coach being late for a meeting and another player Tweeted about the recent loss to Cougar High.  Thank you Captain Hook for pulling the plug.  ARRGH!

Tony Romo needs to answer the bell tonight.  After last week’s abysmal performance during Jerry Jones’ celebrated debut of the new Cowboy Stadium, Romo looks to pick himself up off the mat and come out swinging against the Panthers.  By the way, why change the name to Cowboy Stadium?  What was wrong with Texas Stadium?  Hall of Famer and former Dallas Cowboy Tony Dorsett called Tony down this week about not being a big time player, prompting Jones to come to his QB’s defense.  I think TD has it right and JJ is on another witch hunt for someone with an ego big enough to wear that blue star on his helmet.  Jerry needs that superstar because his brand and his stadium are all he has for now.  Hey Ho! Romo has to go. Hey Ho! Romo has to go.

I don’t know much about motivating people much less professional athletes but I don’t think what Jim Mora did to Olando Mare is going to work.  Mare miss two field goals in Seattle’s loss to Chicago Sunday prompting Mora to call down his kicker in front of God and everyone, saying his team works too hard to lose because some kicker misses field goals.  We’ll Jim, that is nice and all but since you have such a stellar track record in your short head coaching career and an even more stellar track record in leading young men, I have just one thing to say…..Shut Up!  Win yourself some games and then come see me.  Provide a good example to some of your young men and then come see me.  Until then, handle your nonsense in house as Orlando Mare is a professional knows he missed two kicks he should have made.

And that, my friends is what is HOT or NOT in sports.  Join us again for the next SCL’s Fresh Take.

SCL’s Fresh Take

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Jay_Cutler_Chicago_Bears_NFLHey sports fans, welcome to the all new SCL’s Fresh Take, a whole new twist on sports for you, the fan.  Today, we have a bunch of topics from over the weekend to discuss, so let’s get started.

With the first Sunday of NFL games yesterday, did anyone happen to watch Tiger Woods mop up the field at the BMW Championship?  Tiger was incredible while notching his 5th win at Cog Hill.  His 62 on Saturday was a trunk slammer for the rest of the field as Tiger was rolling the rock to the tune of 26.5 putts per round.  When Tiger has the flat stick going, there is absolutely no one who can beat him.  Michael Jordan offered some friendly advice for his pal after his Hall of Fame acceptance speech, “Kill or be killed.”  That mentality, coupled with a hot flat stick means trouble for the rest of the boys on tour.

How about the four interception debut on Lake Shore drive for Jay Cutler last night?  How many people picked the Bears to make it to the Super Bowl this year and now are rethinking that pick?  Cutler was slinging the pigskin all over the place and could have been picked 2 other times.  Cutler should take a chapter from the Aaron Rodgers book on quarterbacking as Rodgers played with poise beyond his years.  A big arm and a big mouth don’t win Super Bowls Jay Boy.  As I said in April just after the trade was made for Culter to Chicago…..Broncos Win, Bears Lose.

Next, did you see the meltdown by Serena Williams yesterday during the finals of the US Open?  Can you say McEnroe-esque?  I’m not sure why the outrage as this type of behavior has been going on for years.  Johnny Mac used to break racquets, swear at refs and throw cameras around.  The rules are much different I guess in tennis.  This ain’t basketball where the refs don’t get intimidated and will just tee you up for any personal threats or crazy outburst.  A couple of tees and they’ll run you for the night.  Off to the showers baby!  Adios!

How about on the injury front for week 1 in the NFL?  The Bears lost two starters in game 1 with Urlacher going down for the season with a bad wing.  McNabb broke a rib for the Birds causing the boys from Philly to sign Jeff Garcia as insurance.  Defensive standouts Jerod Mayo and Troy Polamalu both went down with bum wheels to add to the list.  A lot of big names in week 1.  Once the leather starts popping in the fall, NFL stands for “Not For Long.”

Last, Derek Jeter surpassed Lou Gehrig’s 70 plus year old record for most hits by a NY Yankee.  Can you believe that? Nice story and all but with the storied history of the Yankees and all the greats who donned the pinstripes, can you believe they have never had a player with 3,000 hits?  WOW!  I would have never guessed that with the likes of DiMaggio, Ruth, Gehrig and Mantle.  In typical Jeter fashion, after the record setting bee bee to right, Jeter simply tipped his lid acknowledging the crowd.

And that is our five big stories from the weekend.  Join us again tomorrow for the SCL’s Fresh Take.

ESPN has become the CNN of Sports

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

espn_CNNRemember the day when CNN was the end all, be all of primetime news?  Those days are long gone now that FOX News has become the dominant player in primetime media due in part to its “Fair and Balanced” approach to journalism.  Fox News has taken market share from CNN simply because CNN developed a media agenda and lost its objectivity.

ESPN is spiraling downward to the same abyss CNN reached which eventually lead to CNN looking up the ratings ladder at its competition instead of down.  ESPN provides very good sporting events and news coverage but has become part of the “establishment” media fraternity since it sold out to media giant ABC.  These “establishment” media houses are apart of the northeastern liberal corridor that much of America despises.  Since the buyout by ABC, ESPN has promoted and protected those athletes who they endorse instead of fairly covering the news.

ESPN sat on the recent Ben Roethliesberger story but earlier that week released a video of Pacman Jones in a strip club from two years earlier.  While the Big Ben story was not worth covering, the timing of the Pacman Jones video was very questionable.  Why would ESPN wait until a few days before NFL training camps open up to release the video when the video was two years old?  ESPN had an agenda to protect Big Ben and an agenda against Pacman Jones.

The day after Phil Mickelson finished 2nd again at the US Open this year, the only thing Mike Tirico could talk about was how Phil “couldn’t get it done”, “can’t finish when it counts” or “makes a mistake down the stretch.”  Tirico nor ESPN ever mention how Tiger Woods failed to close out the US Open when holding or being tied for the lead in 2005 and 2007.  Tiger bogeyed 16 and 17 on Sunday to lose by 2 strokes to Michael Campbell at Pinehurst.  How Tiger failed to close out the Masters in 2007 when holding the lead on Sunday.  How Tiger was in the last group of the 2009 Players Championship and shot 73 and eventually losing by 7 strokes to Henrik Stenson.  ESPN has an agenda to protect Tiger Woods’ image.

ESPN Radio talk show host Colin Cowherd spent an entire show in 2006 speaking of the ills of baseball Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett the day after Puckett died prematurely from complications of a stroke.  Cowherd and ESPN had an agenda on domestic violence and used Puckett’s death as a platform to air their agenda.  While I do not condone any form of violence against women, this show was a despicable display of journalism with very poor timing.  Puckett’s family had just lost a loving father and son and ESPN could not wait for Puckett’s body to get cold before promoting their agenda.  ESPN and Cowherd were classless members of the media that day.

Journalism should be about presenting the facts objectively and letting your audience form an opinion on their own.  When you have the public’s ear, you have a responsibility to maintain fairness and objectivity.  This holds true mostly in journalism and education.  Journalist and professors who make the news for their petulant antics are a disgrace to their professions.  Journalism and educating are just like refereeing a sporting event.  If the audience knows who or remembers the referee, the referee has over stepped his bounds.

Its high time ESPN got some competition in order to bring their biased agenda back to a “Fair and Balanced” approach.

At Moment, Mickelson is better than Tiger

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Phil Mickelson_PGA Tour_PGA ChampionshipAs the news broke that Tiger Woods missed the cut in this year’s Open Championship, I couldn’t help but compare where Lefty stacks up to Woods today.  This is an interesting comparison since Woods has not returned to his top form since knee surgery last year and Mickelson continues to improve his game since the disappointment at Winged Foot in 2006.

If you look at their respective 2009 seasons, Woods leads the Fed Ex Cup points race and money list were Mickelson is ranked 5th and 4th respectively.  Woods has captured three wins this year to Mickelson’s two.  On the surface, it looks like Tiger continues his dominance over the world number two ranked golfer, but if you look deeper at their performances, another story rises to the top.

In Woods’ three wins, Phil was not in the field at all.  In Phil’s two wins, one came without Tiger in the field (Riviera) and the other with Tiger in the field (Doral).  At Doral, the WGC host one of the top fields all year on the PGA tour behind only the four majors and The Players Championship.  Mickelson out distanced Tiger by 8 strokes that week as he closed the gap on Tigers strangle hold on the world’s number one spot.  If you compare their performances in the first two majors, Phil wins again with a 5th place at the Masters and a 2nd place at the U.S. Open while Tiger finished 6th and 6th respectively.

Yes, Tiger has won three times this year and proved in last year’s U.S. Open he can beat the field on one leg, but post surgery, Tiger can not compete with the top players in the world at the top events, week in and week out.  Tiger’s three wins came at Arnie and Jack’s place and his own tournament where the fields were on average, below par.  At Bay Hill, only ten of the top twenty-five players in the world were in the field and only seven of the top twenty five for his tournament at Congressional.  The field at Jack’s tournament was comparable to that of Riviera where Phil recorded his first win this year.

While Tiger struggles to regain his top form and Phil tends to his wife’s illness, we can only anticipate next month where the stage will be set for a great PGA Championship at Hazeltine.  My money is on Phil.

He’s Back…

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Tiger Woods - Professional GolferRecognize the guy on the right?  Before yesterday, he had not won a golf tournament in 286 days, the longest drought in his career.  Of course, as the NBC commentators kept repeating that fact over and over again, they did occasionally remark that, oh yeah, and he had major knee surgery ten months ago…  For those who wondered how Tiger Woods would do in his return to the PGA tour, it took him all of three tournaments to get back in the winners circle.  And with the Masters on the horizon, one wonders how long it is until he wins his 15th Major tournament?  One thing for sure, the television executives are thrilled he’s back!  Were you doing anything else but watching Tiger knocking down a 15 foot putt as the sun set a little after 7:30 PM in Orlando? March Madness?  Nascar?  Everything took a back seat to Tiger being on the prowl again.  His victim this time was Sean O’hair who came into Sunday with a 5 stroke lead, only to watch another Sunday charge filled with dramatic shots and magical putts.  And in the end, O’hair could only watch, like so many others before him.  Was there any doubt Tiger would drain the putt on 18, just like he did at last years Bay Hill?  Or last years US Open?  Arnie was just waiting to thank Tiger for again making his tournament a thrillling moment in time and one watched by more viewers than the last two Majors of 2008 after Woods went out for his surgery.   Yes folks he’s back; and with apologies to Padraig and Lefty, Sergio and Geoff, he makes golf and the PGA, relevant again.

Tiger Not Up to Par

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

On Thursday at the WGC-CA Championship, Tiger Woods shot a one-under par 71, finishing day one 6 strokes off the tiger4pace.  After the round, Tiger stated “I just need to get a little sharper.”  This comment is a close cousin to his other favorite quip “I’m close.”  I know Tiger believes it and I can understand why the media and all his fans believe it, because Tiger is known for the unbelievable.  This time, his quips are only a façade to appease his fans, the media and to give Tim Fincham and the PGA Tour a needed boost in the ratings.

This surgery takes at least one full year before the knee starts feeling normal again and can often take much longer for a player to get back to performing to pre surgery levels.  It has only been 250 or so days since Tiger won the US Open at Torrey Pines and his game just isn’t up to par yet.  While the knee may feel great to Tiger, there is still a lot of rust built around Tiger’s game.

Tiger can still compete with 95% of the field as it stands today but it is that last 5% (the percent of players playing well enough to win on tour) of the players that Tiger can not compete with for now.  The man known simply for the unbelievable, may just end up proving me wrong this time, but my money is on the field.
