Fresh Take – Tiger and Phil, Romo, Lions & Twitter

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Tiger_Woods_Phil_Mickelson_Dallas-Cowboys_Cowboy-Stadium1Are you ready for some football?  Hey, Monday Night Football?  Okay, add in a little golf and we’ll have you covered so let’s jump right into today’s SCL’s Fresh Take.

The Detroit Lions got off the schnide yesterday ending an ugly 0 and 19 run through the NFL by beating the hapless Redskins 19-14.  Streak over!  Nightmare over!  Can someone give me an AMEN?  Could this win not have come at a better time for the Lions and their beleaguered fan base who have suffered through bad football, an economy that has gone belly-up and an unemployment rate close to 30%? The answer is a resounding NO!  Lion Fan has had a tough go at it over the past few years and is the poster child for hard times in America.    Too bad President Obama could not figure out a way to steal Detroit Lions stock from the Ford family and give it to the players union like he did with the Big 3 automakers.  If any team ever needed a bailout, the Detroit Lions were it.

Tiger and Phil both won on Sunday and took home huge sums of cash for their play at the PGA Tour finale at Eastlake in Atlanta with Woods raking in a cool $10.8MM and Mick a cool $4.2MM.  Woods’ payday came from winning the season long Fed Ex Cup point’s race and Lefty’s came from outdistancing Woods and the field by three strokes to win the Tour Championship.  The media has built up this Fed Ex Cup race because that it’s job and that is what creates revenue but I’m not sure the Fed Ex Cup is good for the PGA Tour.  Lost in all the hoop-la of are the local sponsors who have been the backbone of the tour and supported its golfers for years and years.  In the old days, the community hosting that week’s event took the players in and treated them as one of their own.  Those days seem to be long gone but should not be forgotten just because our friends in the media have teamed up with Finchy, Tiger and the boys to chase the all mighty dollar.

Finally, an adult has taken charge of a senseless and uncontrolled problem in sports.  Texas Tech’s head coach and self proclaimed pirate, Mike Leach laid down the law today concerning his payer’s use of Twitter.  No more!  Adios Tweetmeisters.  Like I said last week, this is just like pulling a drivers license from a teenager who can not make good decisions.  One of Leach’s players Tweeted about the coach being late for a meeting and another player Tweeted about the recent loss to Cougar High.  Thank you Captain Hook for pulling the plug.  ARRGH!

Tony Romo needs to answer the bell tonight.  After last week’s abysmal performance during Jerry Jones’ celebrated debut of the new Cowboy Stadium, Romo looks to pick himself up off the mat and come out swinging against the Panthers.  By the way, why change the name to Cowboy Stadium?  What was wrong with Texas Stadium?  Hall of Famer and former Dallas Cowboy Tony Dorsett called Tony down this week about not being a big time player, prompting Jones to come to his QB’s defense.  I think TD has it right and JJ is on another witch hunt for someone with an ego big enough to wear that blue star on his helmet.  Jerry needs that superstar because his brand and his stadium are all he has for now.  Hey Ho! Romo has to go. Hey Ho! Romo has to go.

I don’t know much about motivating people much less professional athletes but I don’t think what Jim Mora did to Olando Mare is going to work.  Mare miss two field goals in Seattle’s loss to Chicago Sunday prompting Mora to call down his kicker in front of God and everyone, saying his team works too hard to lose because some kicker misses field goals.  We’ll Jim, that is nice and all but since you have such a stellar track record in your short head coaching career and an even more stellar track record in leading young men, I have just one thing to say…..Shut Up!  Win yourself some games and then come see me.  Provide a good example to some of your young men and then come see me.  Until then, handle your nonsense in house as Orlando Mare is a professional knows he missed two kicks he should have made.

And that, my friends is what is HOT or NOT in sports.  Join us again for the next SCL’s Fresh Take.

Mike Leach: Coach? Pirate? Third Grader? Veruca Salt in disguise?

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Is this Mike Leach?

Remember Veruca Salt? You know, the spoiled little bitch on Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory?  She has reared her ugly head again in the form of the self-proclaimed pirate: Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach.

After the NFL Draft, Leach fired shots across the bows of Cleveland, OH and College Station, TX.  The talented Tech WR Michael Crabtree fell to the 10th pick to the San Francisco 49ers.   Leach’s record-setting quarterback Graham Harrell wasn’t drafted at all.   The results are in: the NFL doesn’t buy the gaudy numbers and have labeled his quarterbacks as ’system quarterbacks.’  Leach got the message loud and clear.

So what does Leach do after the draft? Acting like a third grader who didn’t get his way, Leach was in the headlines, accusing the Browns of leaking reports of Crabtree acting like a ‘diva’ during his pre-draft visit to Cleveland.  He then took a shot at Texas A&M when the Cowboys took Stephen McGee in the fourth round, commenting that the ‘Cowboys liked him better than the coaches at Texas A&M did.’  What did Leach hope to accomplish with this behavior?  Is he trying to save face with recruits that no matter what numbers they put up in Lubbock, they’ll need some luck to get drafted?  He certainly isn’t making any friends in the NFL.

The good news for Harrell: the Browns extended an invitation to try out at their post-draft mini-camp. The bad news: he begins the tryout behind the eight-ball, thanks to his college coach’s comments toward the Browns.

As we’ve credited here before, Leach deserves credit for his success in Lubbock under his watch; but he might want to take some time out from designing his offense and take a course on public relations and dealing with the media. How soon before potential blue-chip recruits get the same message?  After Kliff Kingsbury, BJ Symons, Sonnie Cumbie, Homer Simpson and Gomer Pyle finish their careers with 58,000 passing yards and 800 TDs, we never see them in the NFL.

Leach may be responsible for the program’s success these past few years but he may also be the pirate that sinks the ship.

Mike Leach Wants An Upgrade To First Class

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

mikeleachTexas Tech is lucky to have Mike Leach.  He has provided the Red Raiders with unprecedented success on the gridiron, much-needed facility improvements, a growing fan-base, and a nice place in the national college football scene.  It’s a great ‘fit’.  But thanks to Tech’s stubborn Athletic Director Gerald Meyer, Leach’s tenure should come to an end soon–one way or another.

Leach may have ultimately agreed to a new contract, but the damage to recruiting will have lasting effects.  After an all-too-public negotiating session between Tech and Leach, the college football world now has valid reason to believe that Leach wants out of Lubbock.

From all indications, the sticking point for Leach was that he wanted to able to interview without Tech’s permission.  Meyer was even quoted as being irritated at the annual flirting–allegedly initiated by Leach and his representatives. He interviewed at Washington and was thought to be a candidate at Auburn.  Both would have been an upgrade from the West Texas plains.  What will be the next available upgrade? Virginia? Arizona or Arizona State?

Under Leach, Tech has built and sustained a program with an offensive system that has kept Tech in the national rankings year-in, year-out.  But in order to really compete at the next level, the unconventional system is not enough.  He needs more talent.

To Leach’s credit; he has been successful at recruiting players that fit his system.  But to take that next step, he needs better players.  The blow-out loss to OU and the failures to Alabama and Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl are examples that superior athletes will trump the ‘mad scientist’.

The 2008 season built enough credibility for Leach to try and go after some of those higher-caliber blue-chips.  But thanks to Tech’s athletic administration and the negotiation-by-media, Bob Stoops and Mack Brown will be reminding these prospects of Leach’s perceived desire to get the hell out of Lubbock.

Publicly, Leach will say that he’s a Red Raider for life, that Texas Tech is the only place for him.  But in the cut-throat world of college recruiting, rival coaches will be quick to remind these players of Leach’s perceived intentions.

With the threat of Leach leaving, the Red Raiders will have a hard time even being able to recruit the same caliber players that got them where they are now.

Eliminate Conference Tie Ins for Bowls

Monday, December 8th, 2008

The annual ‘BCS Selection Show’ was held yesterday, and I watched as the talking heads announced the participants in each of the BCS Games.   As I watched the selection for the Orange Bowl, I couldn’t help but think how badly Texas Tech and Boise State got the shaft.  Texas Tech at 11-1, and undefeated Boise State NOT in a BCS game?  Each of those teams EARNED the right to participate in one of the rotating BCS Bowls.  Tech plays in one of the two toughest conferences in all of college football, and certainly THE toughest division, with only one loss.  The Broncos again earned their way in with an undefeated season.  The Broncos have less of an argument with a weaker schedule–its lone victory vs. a ranked opponent over then-No. 17 Oregon, but has proven in the past that it can play with the big boys.

Back to the selection show…in the Orange Bowl, we’re stuck with Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati.  First off, congratulations to both teams as each won their respective conference titles.   Before long, we may be hearing Cincinnati Head Coach Brian Kelly’s name mentioned with Bill Snyder for building a program with very little resources.  And Frank Beamer is one of the best coaches in the country–he always has his Hokies playing salty defense and aggressive special teams.  Each of those teams is deserving of a bowl trip–but not one of the BCS Games.

If we’re not going to have a playoff, at least let’s get the deserving teams into BCS bowls–and eliminate the following: conference tie-ins, and maximum participants from one league.

If I had my pick:

BCS National Championship game: OU vs. Florida

Orange Bowl: Ohio State vs. Utah

Sugar Bowl: Texas vs. Alabama

Fiesta Bowl: Boise State vs. Penn State

Rose Bowl: USC vs. Texas Tech

Each of these contests would feature teams DESERVING of a spot in the BCS Games–regardless of how they are paired.  Conference tie-ins prevent the traditional ‘New Year’s Day Bowls’ from getting the best matchups from teams that earned their way to the big pay-day, and all the spoils that come from playing in those games.

If we’re not going to have a playoff, let’s at least match up the best, most deserving teams.  Virginia Tech and Cincinnati should be playing in the Music City Bowl–not on January 1.

Time for Leach to jump

Mike Leach

Mike Leach

The best college football teams boast one common denominator:  talent.  Credit Mike Leach for assembling a program better than anyone could expect on the plains of Lubbock, TX.   But this will be as good as it gets for the Raiders.  Maybe Leach can get out while the gettin’ is good–there are a few job openings out there in places much more attractive in terms of geography, fan support, and facilities.

Leach has taken the Red Raiders to unprecedented heights as head coach at Texas Tech.  Last night the Raiders had an opportunity to force themselves into the National Title picture–and failed miserably.  Going against a team that was 59-2 at home under Bob Stoops going into this game, Leach had the opportunity to show the nation that his approach to football–a gimmicky offense–is good enough to win on a national stage.  But as history has shown us time and again, teams with talent deficiencies cannot compete at the highest level–no matter how well they run their gimmicky schemes.

This game reminded me of a Thursday night contest back in the early 90s, when John Jenkins took the University of Houston down to the Orange Bowl for a similarly-hyped nationally-televised game against the Miami Hurricanes.  Like Tech, his team had a quarterback with gaudy statistics in David Klingler, and also carried a top-10 ranking.  But the ‘Canes had something waiting for them that always rises to the top with the best programs in college football will always have: talent.  Houston was embarassed, and John Jenkins was soon shown the door after a host of indiscretions with the program.

What could Leach do in Knoxville, TN?  Seattle, WA?  Will ‘The Pirate’ still be in Lubbock next year?
