Week Two Fantasy Tips – Scout the Waiver Wire

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

81706191AB014_SEATTLE_SEAHAOkay FFL Coaches, we are now into Week 2 of the NFL and FFL seasons and if you find yourself 0-2 or 1-1 (or even 2-0; hey it never hurts to shore up your squad!), be sure to be looking for early gems on the waiver wire radar!  Already, undrafted guys like Mario Manningham (seen here) of the New York Giants and others are making noise as their team’s go to guys in the early season games.  Look to churn the bottom of your roster or pick up injury back-ups to bolster your line-up.  Brian Westbrook of the Eagles and Marion Barber of Dallas both got nicked up this past weekend so if you own them and see back ups Leshon McCoy and/or Tashard Choice available on your free agent lists, it may be time for you to snap them up.  When looking who to drop when making your pickups, be sure not to give up on guys too early…  Brandon Jacobs and Randy Moss have not gotten it going yet, but they are still top talents in the NFL (and FFL) so be sure not to get tricked into trading them away or dropping them or you’ll pay the price later this season!  Good hunting!

It’s all about Talent…

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

owens-terrell-buffaloDo Dallas Cowboy fans see anything wrong with the picture to the right?  Yes sir, that is Terrell Owens, the Cowboys top receiver the last three years (actually the last 10 years going back to Michael Irvin) with a BUFFALO BILLS backdrop behind him.  I have been catching the talking heads giving their predictions for the 2009 football season and every one I heard expects the Cowboys to do better this year.  Why?  Well it’s addition by subtraction of course… Huh?!?

If I hear one more time how much better off the Cowboys are this year, I’ll go nuts!  Subtract TO; hmmm that’s over 1000 yards and 10 touchdowns out of the offense.  Subtract Pac-Man Jones; hmmm, that’s knocking out the best cover corner the Boys had last year.  Subtract Roy Williams the safety; hmmm, awesome hitter and intimidator in the secondary.  Are any of those guys perfect players or model citizens?  No way, but tell me, where is the addition part?  All three are great talents and add to a football team!

It is all about talent and how you manage it in the NFL.  If Wade is not tough enough to get the players in line, can him.  If Jason Garrett can’t manage the offense, replace him.  Not the players!  Get more leadership for the locker room!  Ray Lewis and Brian Dawkins were both on the market this year.  Yes, they had high price tags, but the object is to win the Superbowl and both could have helped there.  Jimmy Johnson valued talent and could manage it.  When did the Cowboys get over the top in the 90’s?  When they brought in super “malcontent” Charles Haley to rush the passer.  How did the Patriots get to 16-0 last year?  By bringing in Randy Moss and turning him loose.  Haley and Moss did not suddenly become angels did they?  No, they were managed by veteran leaders and strong coaches.

The Cowboys will not be better this year without TO.  The record may get better due to a softer schedule.  The new stadium will be great as will the national TV exposure.  But the playoff and Superbowl drought will continue until Jerry Jones goes back to the formula that made the Team of the 90’s, strong coaching and stronger players.

Carolina Crush

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

NCAA Basketball Championship 2009Wow!  That’s all I can say about the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game last night.  Never a Tarheels fan, I must bow to North Carolina after they blew away Michigan State 89-72 to culminate a superb tournament run.  From Tyler’s leg to Ty’s toe, UNC shook off adversity over the entire basketball season to end up where many put them at the beginning of the year, Number 1.

This game was over almost before it started.  A 24 fan, I thought I could flip between channels to watch the show and keep an eye on the game.  It reminded me of the 1998 Thanksgiving game between Minnesota and Dallas where Randy Moss embarrassed the Cowboys.  My friend’s wife said we needed to turn the game off while eating (I never went back there for Thanksgiving again!) and when we turned it back on 20 minutes later, bam, it was 21-0 Vikings… In this one it was 21-7 then 36-13 and later, 55-34 at halftime.  Football scores for a UNC basketball clinic.

I was hoping to write about another Michigan State upset, but kudos to Tom Izzo, who continues to show that good basketball is about fundamentals, great defense and team play.  No let my superstar go one on one with your superstar.  No clear out one side and let the boys play.  Izzo actually coaches his players, calls plays and sets up a half court game.  His teams remind us what basketball is supposed to be and his players played hard all year long.

In the end, that is what North Carolina did as well.  They had made a pact to all come back and win a National Championship and with aggressive defense (Ty Lawson had 8 steals among the 14 turnovers committed by the Spartans) and balanced offense (Hansbrough – 18, Ellington- 19 and Lawson 21 points), they did what they set out to do.  Congratulations Tar Heel Nation, the color of today is Carolina Blue.
