Don’t Blame December, Dallas

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Wade Phillips_Dallas Cowboys_NFLIn between taking swipes at Tiger Woods and his nine, I mean eleven, man is it up to an even dozen women?!?, pundits are expounding on the annual December swoon that descends upon the Dallas Cowboys.  Swoon, shwoon; I’m not buying it at all!  Last season the Cowboys went 1-3 in December, horrible right?  Of course all four of the teams they played were playoff teams and three made their respective Conference Championships.  This year the Boys are oh and 2 losing to the New York Giants in the Meadowlands and the San Diego Chargers yesterday.  Both teams were expected to contend this year and the Chargers are riding an eight game winning streak.  On the horizon for the Cowboys are the 13 and oh New Orleans Saints in the Superdome which doesn’t look real good for the Cowboys either.  Long story short, I look at the schedule the Cowboys are playing and don’t buy into the swoon theory.

Where I place the blame is on the coaching staff and Head Coach Wade Phillips.  In four of the five Cowboy losses, the team lost by seven points or less; true that is indicative of most NFL games but what is says to me is that the Cowboys can not  close out quality opponents in close games.  The field goal kicker is four of ten from over 40 yards which is pathetic.  Why does Wade put up with that???  Bill Parcells canned Mike Vanderjagt when he missed a few kicks and he was the most accurate kicker of all time!  Wade Phillips can’t pull the trigger on the hard decisions and it is time to cut him loose.  With coaching candidates like Mike Holmgren, Mike Shanahan and Bill Cowher on the radar screen, Wade Phillips is a liability to say the least!  And oh by the way, send Jason Garrett packing with him…

Week Two Fantasy Tips – Scout the Waiver Wire

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

81706191AB014_SEATTLE_SEAHAOkay FFL Coaches, we are now into Week 2 of the NFL and FFL seasons and if you find yourself 0-2 or 1-1 (or even 2-0; hey it never hurts to shore up your squad!), be sure to be looking for early gems on the waiver wire radar!  Already, undrafted guys like Mario Manningham (seen here) of the New York Giants and others are making noise as their team’s go to guys in the early season games.  Look to churn the bottom of your roster or pick up injury back-ups to bolster your line-up.  Brian Westbrook of the Eagles and Marion Barber of Dallas both got nicked up this past weekend so if you own them and see back ups Leshon McCoy and/or Tashard Choice available on your free agent lists, it may be time for you to snap them up.  When looking who to drop when making your pickups, be sure not to give up on guys too early…  Brandon Jacobs and Randy Moss have not gotten it going yet, but they are still top talents in the NFL (and FFL) so be sure not to get tricked into trading them away or dropping them or you’ll pay the price later this season!  Good hunting!

Divisional Weekend

Friday, January 9th, 2009

After a 2-2 mark on Wildcard Weekend, we’ll try to do better this weekend.  Count me as one who has jumped on the Ed Reed (the lone unanimous All Pro selection) and Baltimore Ravens bandwagon.  Noteworthy this weekend is all four games represent rematches from the regular season…

Baltimore Ravens at Tennessee Titans

This game has slugfest written all over it as two of the NFL’s most physical teams take the field in Nashville.  Tennessee had a week off to get Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vandenbosch back on the field and have their Thunder and Lightning rushing attack provided by Lendale White and Chris Johnson.  It won’t matter…  Reed and crew avenge their earlier season loss to the Titans and move on. Ravens 17 Titans 13

Arizona Cardinals at Carolina Panthers

At face value this game looks like a win for the home team.  Arizona has a weak running game and Anquan Boldin limping on a pulled hamstring.  Carolina brings in playoff experience at many positions and their own brand of Thunder and Lightning with Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams.  Hmmm, guess it still looks like a win for the home team. Panthers 31 Cardinals 20

Philadelphia Eagles at NY Giants

This one looks like the best game of the weekend.  The divisional rivals know each other well and have a healthy dislike for one another.  The Eagles are on a roll with the Defense clicking and Donovan McNabb looking rejuvenated while the Giants are still hounded by the “can they win without Plaxico” arguements.  However Earth, Wind and Fire look rested, ready and relatively healthy while Brian Westbrook is a little gimpy.  The Champs move on looking for that repeat…  Giants 24 Eagles 20

San Diego Chargers at Pittsburgh Steelers

The Chargers are coming off a stunning win over Indy which was preceeded by a miraculous ride into the playoffs, but it looks like the ride is over.  Pittsburgh is rested and Roethlisberger is ready.  This time Polamalu gets to keep his touchdown… Steelers 21 Chargers 13

Kudos to the Schedule Makers

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

My compliments to the architects of the 2008-09 NFL Schedule.  Have you seen the Week 16 games?!?  Giants – Panthers and Steelers – Titans with top seeding in the Conference as the reward!  And while divisional games are always fun to watch do you realize it could be Jets – Dolphins and/or Cowboys – Eagles playing Win and you’re In games in Week 17.  Usually the schedule has games that look like dogs coming in, but it never turns out that way.  Or tell me you knew Vikings – Falcons and Patriots – Cardinals would be big games this time of year…
