tom-brady_NFL_New England Patriots_QB

Welcome back Sports Fans, it’s another addition of the SCL Fresh Take!  Has the NFL season been a surprise, or what?!?  Jockeying back and forth for biggest surprise of the year are the Denver Broncos on the good side and the Tennessee Titans on the bad!  The Broncos are 6 and oh and running away with the AFC West after pasting San Diego on Monday.  The Chargers are off to their normal weak start and look to be looking up at Bronco butt in the standings for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile the Titans got lathered by Golden Boy Tom Brady and the Patriots who watched Brady throw five TD passes in one quarter on route to a 59-0 laugher!  The Titans never showed up for the game and did not want to be playing in the ice and snow in New England.  I love Jeff Fisher and will love him even more when he’s coaching Dallas next year…  A Fisher firing is on the horizon especially after watching the Titans mail it in game after game this year.   On the flip side, Brady continues his reign as the NFL’s favorite and most protected QB.  Did you catch the “Roughing” the Passer penalty called when one of the Titans waved his hand in front of Brady’s face?  I’m stunned Tom didn’t take a dive to get away…

Two other disappointments showed up on Sunday as the Eagles threw the ball 46 times (88% of their plays) against the Raiders and their 31st ranked run defense.  The iggies went down 13 to 9 which led Head Coach Andy Reid to ponder if they should have ran the ball a few more times.  The San Diego slow start makes one forget about Philly, but the Eagles always seem to flush home field advantage in the playoffs by blowing games like this and at Cincinnati last year!  Meanwhile Matt Forte of the Chicago Bears matched his season total of two fumbles in two successive plays at the goal line Sunday night in Atlanta.  The Bears went down 21 to 14 and it looks like Forte will get to go the the Tom Coughlin school of frequent fumblers ; wrap it up Matt!

And that wraps it up for us, stay Fresh!

Broncos Win….Bears Lose

Jay Culter - NFL PlayerTwo weeks ago, we called Jay Cutler petulant because of the immature way he was handling his riff with his employer, the Denver Broncos.  Yesterday, Cutler was traded by the Broncos to the Chicago Bears for two 1st round draft choices and QB Kyle Orton.  Good riddance by the Broncos and break out the life vest in Chicago because that ship is sinking.

Shame on the Broncos for giving in to the petulant behavior but what they received in return is a very good start to an already difficult rebuilding program.  Sure, The Bears receive what many call a franchise quarterback but what they have really received is another Terrell Owens.  Culter, like Owens is smart, has talent and works hard at his craft but he is immature and that will eventually lead to his down fall in the windy city and in the league.

Franchise quarterbacks are hard to come by in the NFL so what makes the likes of Manning, Brady, McNabb and Roethlisberger even more valuable is their maturity level coupled with their impeccable skills.  You must be mature in order to lead people as good people do not follow a rudderless ship such as Cutler.  Cutler did well under Mike Shanahan who is one of the premier offensive teachers and minds in the league but Chicago is a defense first team with Lovie Smith coming up through the defensive ranks of the league.   Chicago was unable to develop Rex Grossman because they had neither the mind set nor skill set to do so.  Quarterbacks with raw talent have to be taught how to play the game such as Troy Aikman and McNabb were.  Those who never panned out in the league like David Carr and Tim Couch had very poor coaching and therefore never had great success.

I can not say the Bears will not have some success with Cutler at the helm but I think the longer term solution at quarterback for the Chicago Bears just took a few steps backwards.

Petulant: Showing sudden irritation, especially over some trifling annoyance.Denver Broncos - NFL Player

Petulant children just need to be waited out.  The waiting out approach often will lead to temporary discourse but usually ends up benefiting both parties involved.  Sometimes this approach does not work as the parent gives in and the child slips into the dark, destructive world of an enabling society.

Jay Culter is acting like a petulant child.  He did not like it when the Broncos fired Mike Shanahan.  He did not like it when the Broncos also replaced their offensive coordinator.  He did not like it when the new regime listened to trade offers as the free agency period began.  Now, for the second time in three months, Jay is asking for a trade.

Jay, this is a business, not a playground.  You have a contract, you are represented by a union and it is time to be a professional.  No one owes you anything.  You are an unproven commodity with a sub .500 winning percentage and no playoff appearances.  The only reason you were selected to the pro bowl is due to a flawed selection process where the selections are done after only twelve games.  If the selections were done after sixteen games, you would have been replaced by your arch rival and out performing nemesis, Phillip Rivers.

I hope the Broncos stand their ground like the Eagles did with T.O. and the Bucs did with Keyshawn Johnson and not capitulate like many in our enabling society have a tendency to do.  The two most egregious examples of this type of enabling were the John Elway and Eli Manning draft scenarios when both players refused to sign with the teams that drafted them.  Caving in to petulant behavior sends the wrong message.  For every John Elway and Eli Manning there are 100 more who wind up in that destructive world and become burdens on society.
