Mike Leach Wants An Upgrade To First Class

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

mikeleachTexas Tech is lucky to have Mike Leach.  He has provided the Red Raiders with unprecedented success on the gridiron, much-needed facility improvements, a growing fan-base, and a nice place in the national college football scene.  It’s a great ‘fit’.  But thanks to Tech’s stubborn Athletic Director Gerald Meyer, Leach’s tenure should come to an end soon–one way or another.

Leach may have ultimately agreed to a new contract, but the damage to recruiting will have lasting effects.  After an all-too-public negotiating session between Tech and Leach, the college football world now has valid reason to believe that Leach wants out of Lubbock.

From all indications, the sticking point for Leach was that he wanted to able to interview without Tech’s permission.  Meyer was even quoted as being irritated at the annual flirting–allegedly initiated by Leach and his representatives. He interviewed at Washington and was thought to be a candidate at Auburn.  Both would have been an upgrade from the West Texas plains.  What will be the next available upgrade? Virginia? Arizona or Arizona State?

Under Leach, Tech has built and sustained a program with an offensive system that has kept Tech in the national rankings year-in, year-out.  But in order to really compete at the next level, the unconventional system is not enough.  He needs more talent.

To Leach’s credit; he has been successful at recruiting players that fit his system.  But to take that next step, he needs better players.  The blow-out loss to OU and the failures to Alabama and Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl are examples that superior athletes will trump the ‘mad scientist’.

The 2008 season built enough credibility for Leach to try and go after some of those higher-caliber blue-chips.  But thanks to Tech’s athletic administration and the negotiation-by-media, Bob Stoops and Mack Brown will be reminding these prospects of Leach’s perceived desire to get the hell out of Lubbock.

Publicly, Leach will say that he’s a Red Raider for life, that Texas Tech is the only place for him.  But in the cut-throat world of college recruiting, rival coaches will be quick to remind these players of Leach’s perceived intentions.

With the threat of Leach leaving, the Red Raiders will have a hard time even being able to recruit the same caliber players that got them where they are now.

Sports can get us through tough times

The Daytona 500.  Baseball’s Spring Training.  March Madness.  The Masters with those famous blooming azaleas.  College Football’s Spring Games.  The NFL Draft.  After a long winter and a great Super Bowl, it’s time to turn the page to a new sports year.

In sports we can find respite from the economic recession, worries about our jobs, and nightly crime reports on the 6 o’clock news.   Don’t waste your time watching the local news; there is almost 100% certainty it will suck.  Instead, keep that HDTV tuned into SportsCenter or your Fox regional sports network on the dish.  The worst news you’ll find there is that A-Rod is now alleged to have taken performance-enhancing drugs or some other gifted sports figure screwing up his good fortune like Michael Phelps exhaling millions of dollars.

Will Dale Jr.  win another Daytona 500? Will this be the year the Cubbies make it to the World Series? Who will draft who in the NFL draft? Will the newly-signed blue chip recruits propel your favorite college team to a BCS bowl next year?

As temperatures start to warm up, relish the smell of freshly-cut grass, a manicured golf course, and the sound of a popping baseball glove and the crack of a bat.  Plan a trip to see a college baseball game or a minor league game.   Dust off the golf clubs.  Fire up the grill & drink some cold beer.

In these rough times, sports may be what keeps us all sane.   Dale Jr. will win Daytona, the Cubs will beat the Red Sox in 6, and I’ve edited-out my local news channels.

Thoughts From A College Football Recruiting Junkie

Monday, January 26th, 2009

National Signing Day is coming up.  The fax machines will be humming with blue-chip recruits signing on the dotted line, we’ll see press conferences at the local high school gyms, and college coaches taking a much-needed (albeit short) breather.  The best programs will be reloading, some programs will make progress in improving their talent, and it is 100% certain that rival fans will be accusing each other of stealing a recruit late in the game because of something ‘under the table.’  It’s a dirty, cut-throat business (more so in some conferences than others), but it’s the lifeblood of any successful football program.

Ah yes, more meaningful football news.  Super Bowl Week  is here–one of the best weeks of the year.  But in a few days, we’ll be going through FWS:  Football Withdrawal Syndrome.  No Midol can cure that, but a little college football recruiting excitement can keep us going until spring practice, the NFL Draft, and mini-camps.

Ten message board topics that usually come up this time of year for college football recruiting junkies:

1. Why the hell is Joey Bluechip committed to those a-holes? They must have slipped him a C-Note.  That coach of theirs is a dirty bastard!  Let’s hire a private investigator & turn them in to the NCAA! Yeah! Who’s with me?!!!

2. My cousin’s neighbor’s daughter’s boyfriend said that Joey Bluechip’s dad got a new job at the local car dealership 5 miles from campus.   Those slimeballs!

3. Half of our players are JUCO transfers; we are in trouble.  Why didn’t we sign more JUCO guys? Our DL sucks!

4. How the hell did Joey Bluechip get into Rival State-U?  He couldn’t even pass basic arithmetic in high school, but good old Rival State U got him in.  Screw Rival State U!

5. We didn’t need him; our coaches didn’t even offer; Rival State U can have him.

6. Who is going to be our ’signing day surprise?’  I heard from my other cousin’s sister’s boyfriend that  Joey Bluechip may secretly be committed to us and will sign with us on Signing Day!

7. We’ll be OK. Recruiting rankings don’t matter: it’s coaching and player development.

8. Why do I get so wrapped up in what a 17-year old kid decides? I need to get back to work.

9. Man I hope we kick Rival State U’s ass next year.  Joey Bluechips younger brother is supposed to be ten times the player he is, and word has it we’re #1 on his list.

10. When does spring practice start?
