Okay, we’re five weeks into the season! Hopefully you are sitting at 5 and oh or 4 and 1 but if not don’t despair, there’s still time to make up ground! Some moves to make…
1) The 3 for 1 Trade: If you feel like you are one player away from really taking off (meaning you are in the upper half of your league standings) and want to make that push towards a Championship, don’t be afraid to over pay and grab the player you covet. Go to one of the also ran teams with a bonafide star (like Roddy White or Willis McGahee) and offer three of your middle of the road guys for their superstar and two of their worst players (Kicker, 5th receiver etc.). This way you fill up your starting lineup with studs and only give up depth in return… One caution, be sure to factor in bye weeks and/or injuries before depleting depth!
2) Don’t give up on players too early! Going crazy over the way Tony Romo or Michael Turner are playing up one week and then down the next?!? Don’t give up yet as the studs always show up sooner or later. Be sure to take advantage of matchups that are favorable but don’t over think it. You picked guys in the first round for a reason, don’t sit them when they can blow up at any time!
3) If you are at the bottom of the pack, don’t be afraid to change it up with trades and pickups. Guys like Jeremy Maclin and Donny Avery are coming out of the woodwork and are outscoring TO and Wes Welker. It doesn’t matter if their NFL teams stink, garbage time touchdowns still count for 6 points! Also if you have one blue chip player, offer him up to the league big boys and let them fight it out for him. Dangle the player and wait for the best offer just like at the baseball trade deadline. Someone will give you a few good guys back, you’ll be on your way towards winning and that’s the name of the game!

Okay FFL Coaches, we are now into Week 2 of the NFL and FFL seasons and if you find yourself 0-2 or 1-1 (or even 2-0; hey it never hurts to shore up your squad!), be sure to be looking for early gems on the waiver wire radar! Already, undrafted guys like Mario Manningham (seen here) of the New York Giants and others are making noise as their team’s go to guys in the early season games. Look to churn the bottom of your roster or pick up injury back-ups to bolster your line-up. Brian Westbrook of the Eagles and Marion Barber of Dallas both got nicked up this past weekend so if you own them and see back ups Leshon McCoy and/or Tashard Choice available on your free agent lists, it may be time for you to snap them up. When looking who to drop when making your pickups, be sure not to give up on guys too early… Brandon Jacobs and Randy Moss have not gotten it going yet, but they are still top talents in the NFL (and FFL) so be sure not to get tricked into trading them away or dropping them or you’ll pay the price later this season! Good hunting!

In this version of Fantasy Tips we want to concentrate on coaching!
1) Know your opponents! When getting ready for a draft or game in Fantasy Football, you need to know who you are playing against. Just like in poker, you want to know tendencies and moves your opponents are likely to make. During the draft, watch for who is drafting what and in what order. Many times you can “steal” a player by knowing that the guy in order behind you is likely to go Running Back, Running Back, Quarterback and you can tailor your picks to maximize your advantage.
2) Go for depth! Its great to have a fantastic starting 9 players but what about injuries or bye weeks??? Make sure you have solid back-ups in the skill positions especially Running Back and Quarterback. I always shake my head watching folks go for Defenses and/or Kickers early to fill out their roster (heck you can even go late for Tight Ends depending who is on the board) when they could get a good third RB or 2nd QB as insurance. Also, when you are drafting late, go for the guys on high scoring teams. It is likely that the 3rd Running Back or Receiver on the New England Patriots is going to score more garbage time touchdowns than the second (or even first) options on the Lions, Rams or Chiefs. Last year Benjarvus Green-Ellis got me into the playoffs when my top RBs went down late in the season.
3) Be ready to make moves coach! Like former Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells above, don’t be afraid to churn the bottom of your roster. Watch the waiver wire and when guys come out of nowhere in weeks 1-3, jump on them! A couple of years ago, nobody had heard of a receiver who went on to score two TDs and gain 210 receiving yards in Week 1 when I grabbed him off the waiver wire. Everybody knows who Anquan Boldin is now though, don’t they?

Okay Fantasy Football fans, its time to get ready for the draft! Some tips:
1) Know your scoring system! Its great to run out and grab a Fantasy cheatsheet or two from a FFL Magazine, but they are of limited help if you don’t use the same scoring system as the guys who set them up. A QB who gets 6 Pts per TD pass gets a better overall rating than one who gets 4 per TD obviously, so make sure you know what to look for!
2) Stay current! The fantasy football magazines out currently were written back in the early summer before training camp and preseason games. They won’t show you who’s lighting it up and who’s letting you down. Biggest thing you need to look for are injuries. Both Terrell Owens and Steve Smith are top receivers who are nicked up right now. Depending on their prognosis you may need to move them down in your ratings to get maximum value for your picks!
3) Don’t overthink your picks! Adrian Peterson (shown above) is widely regarded as the number 1 overall pick. Sure you’ll hear a lot about tough defenses and balanced offenses but all of the guys who do the fantasy evaluations for a living know that too. Go with the experts early and make your hunches and reach picks in the later rounds!
If you have specific questions please send them to us and we’ll answer to the best of our ability. Have a great time drafting!
